If you had the honor of growing up during the 90s the movie Sister Act 2 starring Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill was probably one of your favorite movies.
Last night superstar entertainer Lizzo rocked the MTV Movie & TV Awards stage when she performed her hit single “Juice.” Seeing Lizzo take the stage is always a treat, but what stood out about this performance was her tribute to the film Sister Act 2.
Words can’t begin to articulate how excited I was to see this performance. When Sister Act 2 came out I was 15 years old. I played that movie and soundtrack out! I became an instant fan of Lauryn Hill of The Fugees and R&B singer Tanya Blount and Whoopi Goldberg had always been one of my favorites, so seeing them in the 1993 sequel to the original film had me hooked. To this day Sister Act 2 is one of my all time favorite films and apparently I’m not alone. Lizzo’s decision to incorporate scenes from the film is proof that she’s more than just an electrifying performer, but she’s a student of good entertainment. This performance reminded me that she too probably recited the rap verse from “Joyful, Joyful” or tried to hit that infamous high note from “Oh Happy Day.” Like her tribute to slain rapper Nipsey Hussle during her performance on Jimmy Kimmel, those special touches reminds fans that she’s connected to the things that matter to us. Not only does she understand her audience but she embraces the things that bring us joy and that makes us appreciate her even more.
I swear I meant to write a brief blurb about her performance but Lizzo and Sister Act 2 deserves so much more.
