Photos: Models Own How do you wear your hair?

Sharon G. Jones, RN: I wear dreadlocks.

How long have you been wearing your hair this way and what made you start wearing it this way?

On and off since 1995. I remember distinctly because it was the year my Mother died. My dreadlocks started due to having no strength, no desire to do my hair while my Mother was in a coma for two months. I’ve cut my locs off and restarted them a few times over the years. I also kept them chin length for years…would never let them get any longer.

What type of relationship do you have with hair?

A casual one. I keep my hair in perspective. It’s only hair. Sometimes I like my locks neat, sometimes I like to wear them tousled. I definitely like to style my locks in different ways.

How do people react to your hair choices?

They react mostly favorably, although it wouldn’t matter to me if they didn’t. I normally get positive reactions to my hair, and that’s whether my locks are hanging long to my mid back, wrapped up in a bun, falling in curly tendrils on my shoulders or twisted short and neat on pipe cleaners. Sometimes I’ll add some spray color, but not often. I’m always surprised at the number of people who think my locs are braids, are fake, that they can be “combed loose” and put back. I get quite a few assumptions.

What’s your daily hair routine?

I wake up in the morning and decide how I am going to wear my locs. I apply a small amount of oil to my scalp and to my locs daily. I use witch hazel (on a dry cloth) 2-3x a week to clean my scalp. I inspect my locs daily to check for breakage and to remove lint, and other particles, that would cause them to look unsightly. I try to remember to cover them at night with a sleep cap.

Who is your hair inspiration?

No one in particular, although I’ve always LOVED India Arie’s perspective on hair, what it means to her and how she’s worn her natural hair from the beginning.

What are 3 products that you use on your hair?

1. Argan/Coconut/Olive Oil combo
2. Thayer’s Original WItch Hazel Astringent
3. Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Shampoo

How does your hair make you feel?

My hair makes me feel GOOD! It’s a true reflection of the woman I am and the kind of life I lead. I’m a no fuss, no muss kinda gal. My hair falls right into that way of life. I love the fact that I can go out in the rain, without an umbrella, and not have to worry about my hair!
