Rosalyn McGee may have gotten her start in the beauty industry as an actress, but she plans on making her mark on several industries as well as returning to acting. If you don’t know her, I suggest you do yourselves a favor and get acquainted with this Detroit based makeup artist/esthetician because I get the feeling that she’s just warming up. Her specialty is your natural beauty and the thing that makes her stand out from the rest is her charm and her ability to make you feel like the best friend that you wish you had.
Daily Venus Diva talked to McGee about what she does, why she started and what her goals are. We also got her to give us a few skincare tips.
DailyVenusDiva.com: What exactly do you do in the beauty industry?
Rosalyn McGee: I am a licensed esthetician or skin therapist. I do beauty make-up, facials and body waxing.
What piqued your interest first and why?
Well, my first love is acting. To make a long story short, in college when I was the lead in a play the make up artist did not have my make up color and said he did not know how to do make up for a black girl. So I had to go to the costume store and buy a Ben Nye make up kit and I went to MAC. So I started reading books about make up and my first make up book was by Kevyn Aucoin.
Do you take the same beauty advice that you give to you give to your clients?
Yes I do.
I have combination skin. Dry and oily. What products would you recommend to me?
First you should come so I can do a skin care analysis, but since you asked I would recommend Dermalogica products. For combo skin use the cleanser special cleansing gel which is a gentle cleanser, daily microfoliant (exfoliator), multi active toner and active moist. Come to get a facial so I can treat those dry/oily areas with a masque.
Let’s talk about your hair. You’ve been wearing natural hair forever. When did you decide to go natural and what was the first style that you had?
I always wanted locs when I was in high school, but my mom would not allow me to get them back in the late 90s. So I waited until I was in college. I went back and forth from natural to perms in 1998, but I think I stopped completely perming my hair in 2000-2001.
What’s your natural hair routine like?
I wash my hair once/twice a month depending on how I feel or If I have a protective style. I condition my hair once/twice a month. I have a spray bottle I keep water and oils(coconut, jojoba) in and I moisturize my hair with daily.
When India.Arie sang “I am not my hair,” what do you think she meant?
This was my song. I knew exactly how she was feeling. During that time she wrote that song so many people of different cultures would say I love your hair. And some people from our culture would come up to me and ask me, “why you where your hair like that” or are you Muslim, do you eat meat, etc. Anyway, I felt like India was saying she was more than her hair and to look pass that because it is more to me than my hair. It is a part of me but don’t judge me by my hair. I felt people were judging me by my hair and not who I was. I was not Muslim, I do eat meat (not much, but I eat it). They were stereotyping me and putting me in a box.
