Earlier this month beauty queens from various parts of the country gathered at the Neptune Theater in Seattle, WA for the First Plus USA Competition. After being judged in the categories of active wear, evening gown, interview and personal character, two women were crowned.
The star-studded panel of judges chose Miss Oregon Plus USA, Tara de Alicante, Teen Oregon Plus USA, Mackenzie Barnes to be Miss Plus USA and Teen Plus USA 2014. Each of the winners have worthy causes that they support. Tara de Alicante is a 29 year-old from Portland, Oregon who is committed to bringing awareness to Celiac Disease. Mackenzie Barnes is a 19 year-old also from Portland, Oregon with a passion for reading and Early Childhood Literacy.
To everyone’s surprise, Plus USA also announced the opening of a new division called PLUS USA WOMAN® for the unmarried, double-digit size woman ages 31-40. Appointing its first representative, Apriel Biggs of New York, New York.
The newly crowned beauty queens weren’t the only winners that night. Miss Northwest Plus USA, Brittany Hudson and Teen Maine Plus USA, Hannah Sivret received the ‘We Care’ Scholarship Award. For this award, a delegate from each division who exemplifies a community servant and advocacy were awarded a $250 scholarship.
Miss Mississippi Plus USA, Erica Turner received the ‘Spirit/Congeniality,’ Award for her charismatic and inspirational attitude. This award was voted on by her peers and as the award winner, she received the Pageantry Magazine Spirit Award and magazine subscription.
The competition was hosted by Gwen DeVoe of Full Figured Fashion Week®, and Dylan Avila, a highly sought after Seattle-based comedian hosted the competition. The three hour show concluded with Tracy Feagiai-McNea, Miss Plus USA 2013 and KayDee Weddle, Teen Plus USA 2013 crowning their successors.
