Teen Petitions For A Plus Size Princess: Will Disney Listen This Time?
The conversation of plus size dolls and a plus size princess never gets old. In fact, this topic seems to resurface every couple of years and rightfully so. As more women, teens and little girls gain confidence in their bodies, they understand the importance of positive images for other plus size women, teens and little girls to see.
Jewel Moore is the teenager that sparked the plus size princess conversation this time around. Moore is a high school junior from Farmville, VA., and instead of just talking about it, she’s decided to take action. She’s started a petition on Change.org urging Disney to create a plus size princess in an upcoming movie.
This isn’t the first time a woman has asked Disney to make a plus size princess. In 2012, Taylor Jones petitioned for the same type of change. Her petition ended with 188 supporters but it definitely sparked conversation.
Jewel Moore’s decision to start this petition centers around a number of things. On Change.org, she shares:
I made this petition because I’m a plus-size young woman, and I know many plus-size girls and women who struggle with confidence and need a positive plus-size character in the media.
Studies show that a child’s confidence correlates greatly with how much representation they have in the media. It’s extremely difficult to find a positive representation of plus-size females in the media. If Disney could make a plus-size female protagonist who was as bright, amazing, and memorable as their others, it would do a world of good for those plus-size girls out there who are bombarded with images that make them feel ugly for not fitting the skinny standard.
Currently, Jewel’s petition to have a plus size princess has 21,250 supporters. In the comment section of her petition many of the supporters have shared their personal stories as well as their reasons for supporting this petition. The overall consensus is that it’s time to show young girls that all women are beautiful and worthy of being celebrated by Disney and by society.
