Mom Furious About Schools Use Of Fat Suits In ‘Hairspray’ Production
One Canadian mom in Regina, Saskatchewan is furious. Instead of casting a plus size teenager to play two lead roles in the schools production of Hairspray, Campbell Collegiate had students wear fat suits to make them look bigger. When asked why she was upset about the costumes worn, Tricia Leis replied:
“Something that we tried to point out to them was (that) using a fat suit is pretty much the same as putting a white kid in blackface. Ironically, the fact that nobody recognizes (the suit) as offensive is part of the problem that people face.”
Even though the original film starred Ricki Lake as a plus size teenager, the school did not see it as being offensive. According to a spokesperson their intention was not to be disrespectful to anyone.
