Plus Size Modeling News: Top Modeling Agency Wants To Become An Ageless, Raceless & Weightless Agency
The lack of diversity in the fashion industry has been going on for decades. It’s gotten to the point that many are immune to seeing the same types of bodies, a certain age group and similar complexions on the runway. After all, that’s one of the many reasons that plus size magazines, blogs and fashion modeling agencies were birthed in the first place.
As much as the powers that be would like things to remain the same, there’s a shift happening and that shift is going in the direction of inclusion. In a world where thin is in and thick is only in when magazines and websites want to increase page views, IMG modeling agency is going where few talk about and even fewer go; they’re starting an initiative to sign models of all shapes, sizes, ages, races, and heights.
The modeling agency who represents models like Alek Wek to Kate Upton is looking to add diversity to their roster. Instead of placing their new diverse models in a completly different segment of the agency, IMG plans on mixing things up and letting all of their models play in the sand box together.
“We want to be an ageless, raceless, weightless agency,” declared Ivan Bart, Senior Vice President and Managing Director at IMG. During an interview with Cosmopolitan, Bart shared IMG’s vision and things are definitely looking up.
“I feel like the consumer wants to see themselves,” he said. “Sure, there are women who are naturally thin and can fit into sample sizes, and the plus size market begins at a size 12, but where is the average consumer represented from a size 2 to 10?”
“We just want to represent the best,” Bart continued. “With this new way of thinking, I can tell women who work so hard to get into the sample size, ‘Eat! Be yourself, just be the best you can be — exactly how you are!’ For us, as long as the talent is at a healthy weight that he or she and his or her doctor believe is right for them, and they’re exercising, since that’s a healthy way of life, then the industry should reflect that.”
Currently, IMG does have some hints of diversity on their roster in plus size model Tara Lynn and 83 year old model China Machado, but by adding a wider array of faces to the mix, there may come a day where we see more images like the ones below on the runway and in print.
