Plus Size Blogger Shay Of A Thick Girl’s Closet Thrives In In Her Curves
This October is our “Hypnotic” issue and we are talking with some pretty amazing curvy divas all month long. First up I would like to introduce to you Shay, fashion blogger for “A Thick Girl’s Closet” & aspiring plus model.
Tell our readers a little about yourself:
I’m Shainna, my readers know me as Shay (my alter ego I had in college). I’m a Jersey girl at heart (no fist pumping for me) I love clothes, shoes, boys, and all things sexy. I’m loud, a tad bit crazy, but most of all I’m loyal to my blog and my loves that read my blog. My blog is all about “celebrating plus size fashionistas 1 closet at a time.”
It’s so important for people to know that being confident, sexy, and fierce has nothing to do with the number on your clothes tag. I’m a blogger, aspiring model, a daughter, a shopper, a social media junkie, and an only child, all in a nutshell 🙂
DailyVenusDiva.com: Why did you start your blog?
Shay: To be honest, my blog was just a product of procrastination. I was a senior in college, I really didn’t want to do my homework, and I was sooooo over Facebook. So I went on tumblr (yet again) and created A Thick Girl’s Closet. I just started posting pics of plus size/curvy/thick women that loved their bodies and loved to be fashionable. About three months in, I got a lot of feedback to showcase my own clothing. Then I started my A Thick Girl’s Closet on Blogspot and I haven’t looked back since. My blog will be 3 years old in March 2014 and in that time I have grown to truly love all that blogging comes with, the good & the bad.
DailyVenusDiva.com: What keeps you motivated?
Shay: Truthfully my loves…my readers. I find that I do a lot of things for them. I shop with them in mind, I write a blog post with them in mind, I do different features and attend events with them in mind. Wanting to be my best for them motivates me; knowing that at some point in my day I can touch the lives of someone who I may never meet, keeps me going.
DailyVenusDiva.com: How do you find time to blog & attend so many events?
Shay: I’ve been unemployed for the last year and some change. And though at the time I was upset about it, I’ve been able to devote more time to the blog and to networking, which is why I’ve been able to attend different events. But when I was working full time I would spend my weekend shooting multiple outfits and queue them on the blog for the week. If I had time during my lunch hour I would slip in a blog post. And I can’t forget those late nights being up until 2 or 3am writing posts for the coming week. Blogging takes time and serious commitment, and I take that seriously.
DailyVenusDiva.com: What made you start plus modeling and how long have you been doing it.
Shay: Going into modeling was combination of my own future goals in the plus industry, folks saying I should, and always being mistaken for one lol. Being a fashion blogger, I spend a lot of time in front of the camera when posting my outfits. I also realized that in the future I would like to own my own modeling agency, and I wanted to find a way to learn the industry, and what better way to learn the industry than to be in front of the camera right?! And lastly, every time I attend an event where other models are present, I’m always mistaken for a model, or asked am I a model, do I model, or have I considered modeling. So it’s one of those things where I researched the process and dove head first into it. I’ve been modeling for about 5 or 6 months and am still in the process of building my portfolio, but I figure if I’m going to start modeling, I want to do it the right way.
DailyVenusDiva.com: What does “Thrive in your Curves” mean to you?
Shay: Thriving in your curves, to me means, owning your curves. It’s about loving and accepting the body you are in, not just tolerating it. So many young women point out/concentrate on the negative, the flaws they see. All the time they spend being upset about the flaws, could be used to learn how to love their body. Thriving in your curves, means living your life and not hiding from it. It also means taking risks with your fashion, or with your dating life, or with your professional life. Thriving in your curves is letting your confidence shine from the inside (which isn’t always easy to do) understanding that you are a work in progress, but you enjoy every step of the journey.
DailyVenusDiva.com: It was a pleasure interviewing you Shay! Your blog is great and your modeling port is coming along beautifully! Keep Thriving in your curves!
