I was so excited when I received an invitation to attend the soft launch of Curvaceous K, last month. Besides the fact that it sounds like a DJ rapper’s handle, Curvaceous K, a new curvy girl boutique opening in the Lower East Side (LES) Manhattan, didn’t disappoint. I am truly amazed that we here in NYC don’t have enough designated places to indulge ourselves with new and different merchandise for the double digit diva. A place to belong right here in Manhattan. Is that too much to ask? I must admit, I am old school and love the store environment. I enjoy learning about and touching and feeling new brands, resources, not to mention talk to and get to personally know these proprietors who are entering the curvy fray for the first time.
Taking that leap of faith is always so admirable and I wanted to learn more about the woman behind the mission. Curvaceous K is a works in progress and will be fully fleshed out in a month when the renovations are completed – perhaps if the construction gods are with us, by December 20th to be exact. Curvaceous K is Kathy Sanchez, a curvy girl who is a refugee from corporate America and she is passionate about plus sizes. Gotta love someone who hands you a glass of champagne as soon as you walk in her store! She had me at hello…. Interviewing her I was struck by her quiet and focused charm. “I always just wanted to find pretty clothes for myself. It was always a struggle and a challenge. I love pretty clothes and I know there are other gals out there who do too.” Now that’s personal. I admire anyone who follows their heart and dreams and I support them in that wholeheartedly. Imagine my delight when I walked in and saw some old faves hanging on the racks (Igigi, SWAK) and some new brands I haven’t had the pleasure of trying on!! Full Figured Fashionista is finally in print!!! Love the tops!! New favorite brand – Taylor Woman. OMG! I had to have this subtle snake print dress with a pink belt and rockin’ hot pink lining (the workmanship on the inside is as good as the outside and shows an attention to detail that just screams quality). And the silhouette is like nothing I own. What a flattering fit. Set in waist and giant set in pleats on the skirt with huge side pockets. Not for your wallet and keys, for your hands!! Divine!!! I didn’t even know how much I needed a dress like this. An updated wardrobe piece if there ever was one.
My Saturdays are precious commodities and there is nothing I love to do more than meet new friends, revisit old ones, find a new store/resource/service/product and shop that truly delivers. I felt comfortable and think this store will be a destination for many women in our city, and even tourists who need an excuse to come to New York. The dress I bought was actually so special I think I will wear it for Thanksgiving. See, I believe in dressing up for Thanksgiving Day. Many curvy women love to “hang out” in their sweats all day, even if they are invited out to someone’s house. But as an image consultant I know the importance of appearance. I usually have an invitation at a family or friend’s home and I think you owe it to the host to dress up to show your appreciation and honor all the hard work they have gone through to provide a beautiful meal and entertain you for the day. If the outfit has a little structure in it, as this Taylor Woman dress has the set in waist, it will act as an automatic tool to keep me from overeating. I will probably wear it with my favorite Underology shapewear underneath and it holds me in and reminds me to not overdo it. As a pre-diabetic woman, I am constantly finding ways to stay on track and integrate it into something I love to do already….get dressed up!!! What a win/win situation.
Take a trek to 179 Stanton Street and visit this new addition to our specialty retail boutique choices. I think the renovation will transform it into a beautiful, comfy and inviting place to visit often. I hope she has networking events and special parties and frequent get-togethers there. We need a hang out where we can go to buy a goody or two to make us feel pretty. Thank you Kathy….we’ll be watching and hope others will embrace you and make you their Special K, too.
