Dear Olga: My name is Mindy and I am going to be 16 in 7 months. I am half Spanish & half Italian. Both of my families want a huge sweet 16 for me, my sister had one. I am the only ‘fat’ girl between my friends and in my family. I do play sports, I am an active girl but big all around. I hate the thought of being the ONLY fat girl in my sweet 16 party. All my friends that are participating are fit and pretty.
I am now fighting with my family, and friends because they just don’t understand how I feel. I don’t even know where to begin to get a dress for something like this in my size 18/20. Did you have a sweet 16? How big were you at 16? I hope you can help me and sorry for all the dumb questions.
Mindy from New York City
Dear Mindy: First of all congrats on turning 16 soon! That is such a fun age, you are going to enjoy yourself. I want to start first by asking you one favor? Please stop feeling sorry for yourself or bad about who you are and what you look like. That is a weak trait and you sound like a strong girl to me. You need to love yourself enough to want to celebrate yourself, your sweet 16. This comes once in a lifetime. I am sure your family & freinds love you and just want to help you enjoy this special day.
I was YOUR size at 16! I had a huge party and guess what? I was the star, not because it was my party, but because I loved myself, thick skin, rolls, and junk in the trunk. My friends loved being around me because I was a positive person.
You are so lucky, now there are hundreds of plus size designers. I wasn’t as lucky around my time. One of my favorites is www.sydnescloset.com. There are also several top notch designers located in your area that you could approach. I am emailing you a list, because the list is long.
I want you work on loving and appreciating yourself first. Dresses, shoes, friends & family will always be there for you. You need to be there for yourself.
Now as a special gift from me to you. Send me some images of your party and I would love to celebrate you in this very magazine. Daily Venus Diva is all about loving your curves and being positive.
