Tips to Become a Healthier Plus Size You

I want to take this time to encourage my fellow full-figured ladies to visit your doctor, start working out or figure out a plan to get healthier. Being a plus model you learn that it’s not about losing weight to be a size 2, it’s about losing weight to get to a healthier more fit you. Also, with having a very active 2 yr old, I have to be fast enough to catch her sprinting spurts in stores or just around the house. After having my daughter, I found it hard to take off the pregnancy weight and found myself at 309 lbs. Every time I went to the doctor for routine visits, I found myself being told that I had high blood pressure. This has never been an issue before. With the threat of possibly having to go on medication and not being comfortable at that size, I decided to do something about it. Here are some of my tips and suggestions that helped me knock 30 lbs off and still going.

1. Get moving – It’s been said that just any type of movement is good for you. At least 30 minutes a day is an improvement. Eventually, you’ll want to increase that but it’s a great start! I have to admit, when I started doing at least 30 minutes on the treadmill, I did find that I had enough energy to last me until I got off at 9 p.m. I used to yawn; my eyes would water, and just felt wiped out by 7, now I have enough energy to make it through the night. You can take walks around the neighborhood, visit some of your local parks, or take the stairs instead of the elevator, it all helps. Don’t think of it as exercise, its activity. According to WomensHealth.Gov they recommend 2.5 hrs of moderate activity a week or 1.25 hrs of intense activity or a combination of both plus strength training.

2. Get help – I find that when I’ve reached a plateau, I need just a little help to get to where I want to be physically. For some, they join groups like Weight Watchers. Others join local groups to walk with. I decided to enroll into the weight loss program with Urban Skin Solutions. I get 2 injections and still have to workout and watch what I eat to get any results. I go in for monthly check-ups and get nutritional guidance.

3. Change the way you eat and what you eat – I started eating salads more, which got me to try salad dressings of a huge variety to get something that tastes good. Wish-bone has a nice Berry Vinaigrette. I also switched from eating regular yogurts to eating Greek yogurt. It is high in protein so it makes the most of your snacking. If you happen to be in a situation where you have to be at a fast food restaurant, find out what low carb options they have. Hardee’s has a low carb version of all their hamburgers. Its the meat nicely wrapped in 2 layers of lettuce, very tasty. Even the McDonald’s Deluxe Wrap is better than actually getting the Big Mac. I love the taste of the wrap. Also, drink plenty of water. If you’re not a water drinker, definitely try out the flavored mixes. Crystal Light no longer dominates this section of the grocery store. You can find many different options including organic ones. If you’re a juice lover, then I suggest trying Naked. These juices are very taste, kind of costly, but no sugar added.

These are just a few of my suggestions. Definitely find out what works for you. Always remember to pace yourself. Even a 10 lb loss makes a difference in your health; it lowers your risk in many diseases, gives you energy and can extend the quality and length of your life. Ladies, it’s time to start putting your health first!
